Job Developer
Program: Phoenix Learning and Employment Centre
Location: Halifax, Nova Scotia
Reports to: Coordinator, Phoenix Learning and Employment Centre
Job Summary: Youth who are at-risk and homeless often find it extremely difficult to gain work experience. The Job Developer is responsible for building relationships with employers to create job opportunities and paid work placements for youth. By assessing youths’ needs, the Job Developer is able to foster relationships and negotiate employment matches with current and potential employers. Objectively supporting the success of the work experience often involves the Job Developer’s skill in promoting youth mentorship, coaching, and balancing the needs of the youth and their employers and when necessary, encouraging compromise.
Status: This is a full time, term position until April 30, 2011, with the strong possibility of renewal.
Compensation: A competitive salary, comprehensive group insurance plan, RRSP contribution, three weeks of vacation (pro-rated) in the first year.
Hours of Work: Monday - Friday, 40 hours per week, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m., with occasional evening and weekend work to attend Phoenix-related activities and conduct speaking engagements.
Screening Requirements: This position is subject to a satisfactory criminal record check and a child abuse register check.
Start Date: Late September, 2010
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Meet with youth and conduct employability skills assessments;
• Identify and approach employers in the community with the goal of creating employment opportunities for youth;
• Inform potential employers about Phoenix, the issues of homelessness and the benefits of the program through various communication methods such as promotional materials and presentations;
• Coordinate job placements with employers;
• Supervise job placements and support youth and employers to facilitate employment success as youth transition toward employment independence;
• Liaise with agencies on behalf of youth and Phoenix;
• Maintain records, statistics, and assessments as required ensuring confidentiality;
• Recommend policies concerning Phoenix’s social justice practices;
• Participate in community networking groups as is effective.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Bachelor of Social Work, or a related undergraduate degree and a Child and Youth Care diploma, or equivalent education;
• A minimum of three years of experience working with homeless or marginalized youth;
• A minimum of one year of experience in job development, career counselling and job coaching;
• An understanding of the issues related to at-risk youth and homelessness, particularly as they relate to Halifax’s labour market;
• A demonstrated ability to foster positive relationships with employers in the community;
• Extensive knowledge of community resources and social service delivery systems related to youth employment;
• Experience using a youth-directed approach and within a social justice framework;
• Assertiveness and strong interpersonal and organizational skills;
• Non-violent crisis intervention training and standard first aid training or a commitment to secure those requirements within six months of being hired;
• Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook;
• Ability to work effectively in a team setting;
• Suicide intervention training is an asset.
