The Transition Program
The Transition Program will include four weeks of assessment and skill development followed by a gradual placement into a supported work environment. Staff will work with youth as well as employers to ensure placements are a good fit and expectations are clearly outlined. Youth will work twenty-four hours/week with employers and reconvene as a group at PLEC for six hours/week to continue their group based learning and address any issues they may be facing.
Youth in the Transition Program will achieve the following outcomes:
- Identify existing skills and competencies;
- Identify career interests;
- Explore one or more careers;
- Develop teamwork skills;
- Practice speaking in public;
- Explore and practice the elements of a successful job interview;
- Learn about different educational opportunities;
- Create a portfolio;
- Earn certificates specific to their employment goals such as First Aid and CPR, WHIMS, Food Handlers Education Course, Super Host, etc.;
- Learn and practice how to set goals;
- Develop an action plan;
- Participate in a work placement;
- Develop interpersonal and self awareness skills;
- Understand employer expectations;
- Develop problem solving and conflict skills; and
- Practice skills and receive feedback.
Using an adult education model, the Learning Facilitator will design and deliver life skills, literacy, numeracy, pre-employment and employability curricula based on an assessment of the learning needs of youth participants. The Learning Facilitator will help youth develop a plan that includes skill development, work placements and future goals. The Learning Facilitator will assess clients’ needs as they relate to pre-employment, life-skills, academic and employment success and work collaboratively with other Phoenix staff and community partners to ensure plans are well coordinated. Each year, this will be a 10-month position from September to June.
