" Phoenix is my family"

These were the words of Jessica, the emcee of Phoenix’s Annual Donor Recognition Event held June 16 at the St. Mary’s Boat Club.
Jessica came to Phoenix when she was 17 years old. Prior to this she was living between a shelter and a hospital and needed a longer term place to go. Jessica moved into Phoenix House in June of 2005, receiving the support to not only complete high school but to do so with honors. While living in the house she learned many things including how to cook meals, how to get along with individuals, and how to build lasting friendships. “ They taught me that I have the potential to do whatever I want to do and always encouraged me to do my best, “ shared Jessica.
In September 2007, Jessica began college in another community yet she was pleased to say that staff from Phoenix continued to be there for support.
“Phoenix is my family”, says Jessica, “Normal teenagers leave for college and have a family back home who support them. I had my Phoenix family, who I can call at anytime and there is always someone to talk through things with and to support me in making positive life choices”.
Jessica acknowledged that she wouldn’t have her “family” if it wasn’t for the generous contributions that help to ensure the doors at Phoenix continue to stay open.
Today, Jessica is a college graduate, having received her diploma in Disability Supports and Services in May from NSCC. Today, she is a support worker in a small options group home. Phoenix is extremely proud of Jessica and all Phoenix youth for their many contributions to this year’s Donor Recognition event – they continue to inspire us on a daily basis.
