Volunteering - It's a Feel Good Thing!
More than ever the greatest gift one can give is their time. Phoenix youth are supported each and every day by the generosity of a legion of volunteers who give of themselves through their skills and interests, and the exchange is a win-win all the way around!
In September, the Phoenix family celebrated the dedication of our volunteers at a reception held in their honor. Phoenix youth James and Coty served as their hosts, and it was their message of gratitude, delivered on behalf of all Phoenix youth, that captured the true essence of our volunteers and the impact of their caring:
“Many youth call Phoenix their home, their family. The things you do for us are incredible. You cook meals, you tutor, you help us learn about gardening and fix our buildings. You’re sitting on committees to raise money, and most importantly you help Phoenix send its message out into the world, and provide us with valuable leadership. You offer us your expertise, your time, your talents and most importantly yourselves. You produce some of the best ideas, creativity, and help develop new initiatives. You introduce us to others who believe in Phoenix. You encourage others to believe in Phoenix’s’ vision.”
Tami Clarke, a volunteer at Phoenix House who has prepared a meal for youth every Sunday for the past eight months, was moved by the difference such a ‘small gesture’ (in her words) has made in the lives of so many, including her own.
“I go to Phoenix for a couple hours each week, and I leave feeling energized, hopeful, whole. It doesn’t take money to volunteer, just some time; and it can be a recurring commitment, or just a one-time thing. Both are equally valuable. By volunteering you are part of the bigger picture; you are helping youth prepare themselves for life; helping someone understand what it’s like to be able to rely on someone else, to trust. And that’s HUGE!
These words are a true testimony that volunteering really is a feel-good thing. And you can feel good about volunteering, too! Visit our website at www.phoenixyouth.ca to learn more about how you can make a difference.
