Phoenix Welcomes Youth Volunteers from Massachusetts

On Thursday, July 2, 2009 Halifax welcomed a group of 43 youth volunteers from the Second Congregational Church of Boxford, Massachusetts.
The youth made the journey to the East Coast of Canada on a mission trip organized by the Boxford church. During their stay in Halifax, members of the group volunteered with three organizations; Phoenix Youth Programs being one of them.
Phoenix is especially pleased to have hosted fifteen members of the youth group, as they graciously helped with a variety of projects at the Phoenix Youth Shelter, from painting resident bedrooms to building storage units. These contributions have added to both the look and feel of the shelter. In the early morning the volunteers had an opportunity to learn about the shelter, as well as the other services that Phoenix provides to at-risk and homeless youth in the region. An enjoyable afternoon of painting was kicked off at noon with a barbeque and presentation to celebrate the group’s visit. Some Phoenix youth were able to participate during the day in various painting projects. All in all, the day was filled with plenty of laughter, cooperation and teamwork.
Ms. Kathie Clark, Director of Youth Ministry with the Second Congregational Church of Boxford, states that, in traveling north to help Maritime communities, the youth are able to see, first-hand, some of the challenges that our community faces. Additionally, they are able to experience a new culture. Ms. Clark says, “Our group is very excited to have been part of the community. We were able to learn more about the area, as well as the programs that are offered.” Some of the group’s previous mission trips have included work in Colorado, Louisiana and Kentucky, to name a few. Through the youth missions and projects, Ms. Clark shares that the Boxford church community hopes to “Provide an experiential education that empowers and inspires people to take action to create a sustainable, socially just, economically viable and environmentally-sound world.”
The mission trip to Halifax demonstrates that youth volunteerism is alive and well. No matter where you are from, there are communities throughout our continent that require attention and support. Many thanks to the Boxford youth for giving of their time and energy, and for visiting the Halifax community this summer! What a fine example they have set for us all.
