Halifax, Tuesday, October 20, 2009 – Phoenix Youth Programs is pleased to announce that Bell Aliant has made a generous two-year financial commitment towards the nutrition program at the Phoenix Emergency Youth Shelter. This gift will assist Phoenix in providing ongoing nutritional support to the youth who access the shelter.

Phoenix offers a wide range of programs and services for youth who are homeless or at-risk of being homeless, and are between the ages of 12 to 24.  The Emergency Shelter is home to 20 youth and is full every night of the year. Approximately 350 youth access Phoenix’s services at any point in time, including the Prevention Program, and Phoenix House, among others.

Bell Aliant has consistently demonstrated a steadfast commitment to support Atlantic Canada in building stronger and healthier communities. “Bell Aliant is proud to support the tremendous community work of Phoenix”, says Kevin Fournier, Regional Vice President Sales, Bell Aliant.   “Not only do they provide a safe environment for adolescents facing homelessness, they offer a wide range of programs and services created to instill life skills that will lead to future successes for our youth.”

Adolescence is a time of intense growth - physically, psychologically, and emotionally. Access to counseling and proper nutritional support ensures young men and women can take positive steps toward a brighter future.  Many youth come to us with a history of poor eating habits,” states Phoenix’s Executive Director, Timothy Crooks. “The Shelter establishes regular meal routines, educates youth on healthy choices and helps them feel that they are part of a community that cares and supports them.” Youth can access programs and services at any point along Phoenix’s continuum of care, depending upon their particular needs.

Bell Aliant’s community partnerships, like those forged with Phoenix, ensure that those who are most at-risk and vulnerable - our youth and children - are not neglected. They have joined with Phoenix to ensure the continuation of Phoenix’s mission to break the cycle of homelessness and poverty.
