Phoenix Learning and Employment Centre

"It's good because... you get to know the staff really well. There's a sense of trust and caring. They help you with resumes, job interviews and getting experience. They're always willing to help you if you need it. It's just a good, comfortable environment to gain knowledge about the workplace and life in general. There should be more places like this and I'm glad there's a place like this here for me."

Youth Moving Forward

Phoenix Learning and Employment Centre (PLEC) opened in May 2000.  The goal of the program is to provide youth with support and learning opportunities for skill development so that they are able to make a successful transition to school.  As well, we support youth to develop the necessary and appropriate skills for meaningful employment.

Through our programs and services youth are provided with an environment that supports and challenges their learning.

Like other Phoenix programs PLEC strives to support youth in their transition from adolescence to adulthood and independence.  Using a case management model, staff work with youth to develop an action plan so they may move forward with their educational and employment goals.   We appreciate that youth making decisions concerning education and employment are engaging in a learning process.  Often our role at PLEC is to guide youth through this process and to illustrate how these goals are interconnected.

Many of the group based programming is delivered using facilitated workshops.  Small groups help participants develop and practice skills in a supportive environment.  Some of the topics include communication, problem solving, personal management skills, and teamwork skills.   In addition to group based programming, youth are also able to work one on one with a Career Counselor or Job Developer to develop an action plan.

Transition Program: Group Based Employability Skills (Skills Link)

This is a program designed to support high priority youth to develop life and employment skills through facilitated workshops, individual support and a gradual transition into a work placement.  The program will address issues related to life, social, pre-employment, essential and employment skills necessary to begin a meaningful transition towards employment.
