Phoenix Leading Research on the Health of the Non-Profit Sector

Nova Scotia FlagPhoenix has partnered with the Federation of Community Organizations to undertake research on the labour needs of the non-profit sector in Nova Scotia.  This research, funded by the federal government, is the first of its kind in the province and will provide a glimpse into the state of the health of human resources for non-profits in Nova Scotia.

Given the size and valuable role played by Nova Scotia's non-profit and voluntary organizations, the long-term health of the sector is significant both to the organizations themselves and the province as a whole. Nova Scotia is one of only three provinces currently undertaking similar research.

Through an RFP process, Gardner Pinfold Consulting Economists Ltd. has been hired to survey the sector through questionnaires for organizations and employees, focus groups and extensive one-on-one interviews.  The research will actively involve key stakeholders at all stages of the project, including in the development and consultation of sector reference groups throughout the province.   A hoped for 500 participants is expected.

The project will determine:

Size and scope of the sector in Nova Scotia in relation to economic contribution;

Educational and training experience, employment history and salary levels of varying staff levels;

Rates of staff turnover as well as push and pull factors associated with staff turnover;

Identification of specific challenges in attracting and retaining 'talent' in Nova Scotia voluntary organizations;

Exploration of staff retention strategies with a view to future needs.

Research findings are expected in the fall of 2010 with a conference scheduled in Halifax for October.  The final report is expected by the end of the year.
