Our Stories
"I am 19 years old. I’ve lived in the Supervised Apartment Program for a year. I have lived in foster homes and group homes all of my life. Before moving into S.A.P I was living with younger youth and that caused problems with rules at the home like curfew and bed times - that kind of thing. I was 18 living with 15 year olds. One of my friends was living in S.A.P and told me about the program and he thought it would be better for me. So I applied for it and got in with no problems.
Now that I have lived in the Supervised Apartment Program I have gained time management, money management and problem solving skills. I knew I had these skills but couldn’t really use them while living in the group home. The SAP program teaches me how it might be when I’m on my own when I’m ready. While I lived in group homes and foster homes I never really had to grocery shop, handle my own money, budget for the phone and cable bill, make my own appointments or get my self up for school. I can do all of that now.
I’m finishing my last year of high school and after that I’m planning to go to NSCC to take Human Services and become a youth worker, maybe in a hospital or in a group home. I want to help youth like Phoenix has helped me and others like me.
Phoenix has given me many opportunities over the past year that I’m so lucky to have had. I got to do a lot of exciting things during the summer like going to P.E.I for four days. We went to the fair, the beach, the board walk and we had camp fires. We also had other programs throughout the summer like cooking, games, swimming and the ghost walk.
Phoenix has supported me through all aspects of my life. I’ve been involved in the Youth In Care Newsletter Project for 5 years. At the launch, the coordinators used their time to come and watch me, which was a big thing for me. I also have had many struggles in high school trying to get through and Phoenix has been there for me and really encouraging me to go and not give up.
I would like to thank all the sponsors for helping Phoenix because without you guys I wouldn’t be able to be where I am today. Everything you guys do for Phoenix has a lot of impact on the youth's lives. I hope you know that and keep doing this for years to come and know it is appreciated by us all."
