Public Statement on Provincial Budget Cuts

At Phoenix, we are deeply concerned about the recent provincial budget decisions that include significant cuts to hundreds of grant programs across Nova Scotia. While we are still waiting to understand the full impact of these decisions for Phoenix, we know that for many people in our province, these changes will have real and lasting consequences.

The reductions affect community‑based services, arts and cultural initiatives, supports for Mi’kmaw and African Nova Scotian communities, and programs designed to address systemic inequities, including food security initiatives, mental health programs, family and parenting supports, and youth outreach. Amid an ongoing housing and affordability crisis, these cuts will harm the individuals and communities who rely on these programs, pushing many further into the margins.

Nova Scotia already has some of the highest rates of food insecurity and poverty in Canada. Young people, particularly those from marginalized communities, remain among the most affected. As a result, demand for our services continues to rise. We rely on collaboration with many incredible partner organizations to best meet the needs of the youth, families, and communities we serve.  The health of the social sector impacts the health of us all.

When the voice of community is heard and understood, change is possible. We are encouraged by the provincial government’s decision to reinstate some funding to seniors, disability groups, and Mi’kmaw and African Nova Scotian communities. While we recognize the significance of this, the work cannot stop here. We deeply value and respect our working relationship with government. However, we call on our elected officials to continue holding conversations with organizations in the sector to better understand and reconsider the cumulative impacts of these cuts.

Phoenix stands in solidarity with our non-profit partners, and we remain committed to building communities where everyone can thrive.
