I’m excited to share Phoenix’s 2025–2026 Report to the Community with you!
My name is Shae, and you may recognize me from my interview in last year’s report. At that time, I had just graduated from high school, and it’s hard to believe only a year has passed because so much has happened since then.
Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to travel and take part in many unforgettable experiences. I’ve attended leadership conferences and gone on wilderness retreats across Canada, from Ottawa and Winnipeg to British Columbia and the Yukon. While I’m not as involved with Phoenix as I once was, I recognize that their support and referrals helped open many of these doors, which strengthened my confidence and allowed me to take the next step on my path.
Today, I’m writing to you from the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia, where I’m working as a Leadership Development Counsellor at a YMCA camp for high school-aged youth. The 12-day camp is designed to give young people opportunities to build leadership skills and learn the basics of being a counsellor, while canoeing around an island and forming meaningful connections. Although my original goal was to find work as a nature guide, this role has shown me how much I enjoy supporting young people as they grow into leaders.
As I read through this year’s report, several stories really resonated with me. Here are a few highlights I encourage you to check out:
A STEP Forward (pg. 12)
Taking part in the STEP Program felt like real school to me because it focused on personal growth and workplace skills. My first job on the Harbour Hopper happened because STEP recognized my potential, and that experience helped spark my passion for becoming an outdoor guide.35 Years of the Phoenix Holiday Luncheon (pg. 18)
Last December, I was honoured to speak at the 35th Annual Phoenix Holiday Luncheon. Standing in front of 600 people was unforgettable. Looking out at that sea of faces made me realize how many people genuinely care about supporting youth. As a past member of the Multi-Service Housing Centre Knowledge Table, I shared ideas and learned from others about how public service spaces can be designed to better support people. The experience gave me a new perspective and understanding of nonprofit spaces and changed the way I see them today.
As I reflect on the past year, I find myself thinking about the young people who may be connecting with Phoenix for the first time. I think about the opportunities and adventures that await them, and how Phoenix’s support can help them work toward their goals.
